Text lesson

Case Study 1: Thandi – A Professional Domestic Worker

Background

Thandi works as a full-day domestic worker for a family in Randburg, Johannesburg. She has been with the family for 8 months.

What Thandi Does Right

  • Thandi arrives on time every day.
  • She greets her employer politely: “Good morning, Ma’am.”
  • She listens carefully when instructions are given.
  • If she is unsure, she asks questions instead of guessing.
  • She treats the home like a workplace, not her own home.
  • She does not use her phone while working.
  • She follows house rules and routines.
  • She handles clothes, furniture and appliances carefully.

Example Situation

The employer tells Thandi: “Please wash white clothes separately and iron them before Friday.”

Thandi responds: “Okay Ma’am, I will wash the whites separately and iron them before Friday.”

She completes the task exactly as instructed and informs the employer when done.

Outcome

  • The employer trusts Thandi.
  • The employer leaves Thandi alone in the house without worry.
  • Thandi is sometimes given extra responsibilities.
  • The employer recommends Thandi to a neighbour.
  • Thandi keeps her job and earns steady income.

Lesson from Thandi’s Case

  1. Professional conduct builds trust, respect and job security.
  2. Good behaviour helps workers keep jobs longer and get recommendations.
