2.1 Sorting by Color: Whites, Darks, Brights

Before washing any clothes, the first and most important step is sorting. Sorting by color helps you protect clothes from damage, especially color bleeding.

If you mix the wrong colors, you can easily ruin clothes – for example, turning white clothes pink or dull.

2. Why Sorting by Color is Important

Clothes release dye (color) when washed, especially in water. This is called color bleeding.

If clothes are not sorted properly:

  • Light clothes can be stained by dark or bright colors

  • Dark clothes can fade faster

  • Clothes can lose their original look

Example:
Lerato washed Sipho’s white school shirt with a red t-shirt. The shirt turned light pink. Mrs. Nkosi was unhappy because the uniform no longer looked clean and professional.

3. The 3 Main Color Groups

1. Whites

Examples:

  • White shirts

  • School uniforms

  • Socks

  • Towels and bed sheets

How to Wash:

  • Wash whites separately

  • Use warm or hot water (if label allows)

  • Use detergent suitable for whites

👉 Whites show dirt easily, so they must stay bright and clean

2. Darks

Examples:

  • Black trousers

  • Navy uniforms

  • Dark jeans

  • Dark t-shirts

How to Wash:

  • Wash dark clothes together

  • Use cold water to prevent fading

  • Turn clothes inside out before washing

👉 This helps keep dark colors strong and prevents fading

3. Brights (Colors)

Examples:

  • Red, yellow, blue, green clothing

  • Children’s colorful outfits

  • Printed garments

How to Wash:

  • Wash similar bright colors together

  • Use cold or warm water

  • Avoid mixing with whites

Bright colors can easily bleed, especially when new

4. Step-by-Step Sorting Method

Before washing, follow these steps:

  1. Collect all dirty laundry

  2. Separate into 3 piles:

    • Whites

    • Darks

    • Brights

  3. Check for new or strongly colored items (wash separately first time)

  4. Keep heavily soiled items separate if needed

Tip: When unsure, always choose the safer option — wash separately

5. Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Mixing whites with colors
❌ Washing new clothes with old ones
❌ Ignoring strong colors like red or black
❌ Rushing and skipping sorting

Example:
Thabo rushed and mixed all clothes together. After washing, white socks turned grey and dull. This could have been avoided by sorting properly.

6. Quick Tips for Success

  • Always sort before washing — never skip this step

  • Wash new bright clothes separately the first time

  • When in doubt, use cold water

  • Take your time — sorting saves you from mistakes

7. Quick Reflection / Activity

Think About This:

  • Do you usually sort clothes before washing?

  • Have you ever experienced color bleeding? What happened?

👉 Write down one change you will make to improve your sorting habit
